TESTING BEADED EDGE TYRES TO THE LIMIT
Beaded edge tyres are increasingly hard to come by these days, so it
seemed quite natural for us to take the brave step and develop our own
brand, "The
Waymaster Cord". After securing a
manufacturer, the next challenge was to figure out how to test the tyres.
Initially we made use of a 1904 De Dion, but it was simply not
practical. Of course our tyres are always tested by the manufacturers
to at least ECE30, but for such unusual tyres we wanted to go one step
further; particularly as we felt that drum tests only test the tyre in
one plane. In reality beaded edge tyres are subject to many other
stresses such as cornering fatigue, rusty rims
and low pressure dislodgment.
We
still felt therefore that the only answer was to actually use them on a
vehicle under full load conditions. After an interesting evening
at the local Pub, we decided to make a test wheel which would enable us
to fit a 710x90 beaded edge tyre to the front of our new Nissan truck!
Our test started with a 25 mile drive at maximum pressure up to speeds
of around 30mph. We then went on to drive around a set course
decreasing the pressure by 5psi every 20 cycles, to find out when
dislodgment would occur. Tests were also carried out on other
manufacturer's products to form a comparison, and ensure that the Waymaster Cord
matched and in many cases exceeded the standards they set.
This method
of testing has now become standard practice for us and we have gone on
to test the entire Waymaster range in this way.
We have 2 new
tyres being tested at the moment, 760 x 90 and 895 x 135 which will
soon be added to our range which also includes: 710x90, 810x90,
815x105, and 820x120.

AVON
AND VTS STRENGTHEN RELATIONSHIP
With the
rapid progress in technology, an increasing number of cars are being
labelled as "classic", and even relatively modern sized tyres
are becoming more elusive. Because of this, we at Vintage Tyres have a
constantly evolving range as we work to maintain supply of hard to find
tyres.
Vintage
Tyres have been distributors of Avon's classic range for some
time now, and this has seen the re-introduction of many rare and hard
to find tyres, and the development of brand new tyres for classic
motoring, such as the 185R16, 165R16 and most recently the
670R16.
Avon were
keen to extend our relationship and have asked us to include in our
range their modern "specialist" tyres for Rolls Royce,
Bentley, Aston Martin and Bristol cars. We now supply the
original equipment tyres for over a hundred years of Rolls Royce and
Bentley motoring!
Our stock now
includes the following tyres:
235/70R15 101V Avon Turbosteel 70 in black and whitewall
255/65R15 106V Avon Turbospeed CR27
255/60R16 103W Avon Turbospeed CR27
255/55R17 102W Avon Turbospeed CR228D
235/65R16 103V Avon Turbospeed CR227 in black and whitewall

VTS
CUSTOMER
DRIVES TO
SUCCESS FOR CHARITY
Our
congratulations go to all the VTS customers who entered the Peking to
Paris in 2007; in particular entry number 76, Charles Stuart-Menteth
and Andrew May who drove their 1940 Ford the amazing 10,000 Mile
journey on Avon's new and improved Traction Mileage tyres.
The Rally lasted for over a month and passed through 10 world time
zones. We recently caught up with Charles who told us that he was very
pleased with the performance of the tyres, "I didn't have to stop
every few hundred miles for a puncture like some other cars - they
worked superbly".
The duo finished the rally in 38th position and would have done much
better if not for a broken spring just before arriving in Moscow on day
21. Nevertheless all the proceeds from sponsorship went to the
'Chain of Hope' charity which provides children suffering from
life-threatening diseases with corrective surgery and treatment.
Charles sent us this picture showing the Ford temporarily grounded on
the sands of the Gobi Desert.

CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG
During the summer we were visited by GEN11, the world famous Chitty
Chitty Bang Bang and her owner Pierre Picton. In 1967, legendary
Ford racer Alan Mann was commissioned to build several cars for the
film which featured Dick Van Dyke and Sally Ann Howes. GEN11 was
used for most of the driving shots having been fitted with a ford V6
engine and utilising many vintage car components. The tyres fitted by
VTS were 36x4 Lesters - amongst the largest diameter car tyres
available today. We are always happy to welcome customers to our base
in Beaulieu. If you would to talk to someone who works with classic
tyres everyday, or come to us for fitting, give us a call.
